I see my site listed, but I can’t find it when I use the DMOZ Search. Why?

Posted by shadow575 on January 31, 2007

The search function is not what you think it is. DMOZ is directory not a search engine and search engines do a much better job than directories at finding specific sites. Rather what the DMOZ search is intended to do is help researchers find categories. Basically if you want to find a site try searching for the domain only (without the http:// or www.) as this will usually provide you with all occurances of the domain (including deeplinks) throughout the directory.

My Site is as good as my competitors sites which are listed, why has my site been ignored?

Posted by shadow575 on January 31, 2007

Editors are not looking for sites as good the currently listed sites. Editors are looking for sites that offer researchers something more and something unique as compared to the other sites listed. The directory never hopes to list every site on every topic, that isn’t the goal. What editors try to do is list the most unique and content rich sites they find on the topic of the category. Site design and promotion also plays no part in editorial decisions. Everyone thinks there site is better than everyone else’s. This is why our guidelines describe what makes a site listable. As more sites become available and listed, finding something more unique with higher quality becomes more difficult.

I noticed an error in another listing, what should I do?

We appreciate help in identifying these from anyone, not just editors or site owners. You can follow the same procedures for “Updating A Listing” or there is also a thread on the unofficial public forums of Resource-Zone, http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5453 where you can report the problems and editors can then take a look and take the appropriate action.
