How funny. On Wednesday we went to bed with a “Winter Weather Watch Is In Effect from 7am Thursday through 7pm Friday” message from the weather no-it-alls. The prediction was 1/4 - 1/2 inch of ice accumulation thursday, changing to 3-5 inches of additional snow accumulations by Friday afternoon.
Yesterday we awoke to find out that the “Watch” was now a “Warning” and the ice predictions were the same but the snow accumulations had changed to 4-6 inches by noon on Friday. Snow was predicted to begin falling locally around 5pm yesterday. The radio stations beemed “It’s coming, no avoiding it this time.” Yet, I arrived home at almost 7pm and had only just began noticing the occasional sprinkle or flurry.
Late last night after no precipitation had fallen at all, the “Warning” report again changed. Now it was still a warning, but the snow fall amounts had dropped from 4-6 to 1-2 inches over night and an additional 1-2 today. Wouldn’t you know, we got only a slight dusting. Nothing measurable but it was on top of 1/4 inch of ice that was already beginning to melt when I woke up. Things were slick but the temperature was 34 F so it was above freezing. That was at 6:30 am this morning.
Now its almost 1pm. Still no snow accumulation, a flurry here and there though. However the temperature didn’t stay above freezing long. Currently its 27F and everything is refreezing. The local media likes to advertise that Indiana weather is no longer unpredictable and that we can trust their forecast. Yet everyone who was supposedly in the know, was as wrong as could be. I am not one to panic about weather reports, I worked in grocery when I was younger. I saw the masses run to get the milk, bread, and bottled water as soon as the mention of snow was made. However, I would rather be taken by complete surprise by a huge snow fall to deal with the traffic of panicked shoppers fearing a blizzard that never arrives.
That is my weather rant for the year, fire all meteorologists, shut down the weather channel on cable, and let me predict the weather. I would be accurate more often than they have been this year and its just today February. ![]()
